Facebook got me through

A friend recently asked me just how I coped with the trauma that surrounded Littlebit’s birth and the days and weeks that followed. I answered, with the support of our awesome friends and family AND new friends I met through the experience, mainly through Facebook. It wasn’t until then that I realised the impact that Facebook had on us during those weeks. Not Facebook itself but the people on it. It was truly amazing, the support we took from the people who cared and shared their thoughts / prayers / stories with us on there. On the night of Littlebit’s birth and throughout.

Some people think that it’s wrong to share that kind of personal drama on social networking sites, but for us it was the quickest way of letting our friends and family know the situation and news as and when it happened. Obviously the close family received phone calls and texts but we couldn’t have kept everyone else updated in that way as there just simply wasn’t the time, or the inclination if I’m completely honest. We were too focused on what was happening to us that we would probably have forgotten someone important. This way, everyone knew, at the same time and could choose to follow it online or not.

I also got a number of friend requests during the days that followed Littlebit’s birth, from friends of friends who had heard our story and either been through something similar and wanted to share their experience, offer support, or who simply had been touched by what they had heard and wanted to follow her story. It was overwhelming.

Because of this I really wanted to document the support that we got, and this doesn’t include personal messages, of which there were a few. So, in future years Littlebit can look back on it and see just what got us through.

For any of the people mentioned below that are reading this. Thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. It was your love and support that got us all through. Love you all

Katherine Wilson After a bit of a surprise day, Lexie Eunice Wilson arrived at 22:27 this evening, weighing 2 pounds, 4.5 ounces. K is out of recovery and doing fine. Lexie is holding her own in special care and will shortly be transferred to a neonatal ward (don’t know where yet!) More info soon, for now though all is well. Xxx

Katherine Wilson Lexie’s doing well. She’s been transferred to Kettering Neonatal unit this morning, Rob’s going to see her a bit later. I’m still at George Eliot but hoping to follow her to Kettering as soon as I’m stable (next 24-48 hours we hope). On high dependency unit at present so no visitors allowed ( Will let you all know when that changes.

I’m up and about now (as of this evening) just need my stupid BP to settle and they’ll move me over. I can’t wait. Katherine Wilson Update from Kettering this morning. Lexie’s night nurse said she’s doing EXTREMELY well. Breathing completely unaided. They’re not feeding her yet just doing stuff through the long line (glucose infusions etc.)

I said I was really hoping to be transferred down there today and the nurse said she’s doing that well she could possibly be transferred back up here soon if she carries on at this rate. AMAZING!

Katherine Wilson just been told they have Lexie on the ambulance list for transfer back to George Eliot as she’s stabilised so well. She’s not an emergency so don’t know when she’ll get here but it should hopefully be today or tomorrow latest. Woooooooop!

Katherine Wilson change of plan yet again and Lexie’s now not coming back to GEH quite yet. No change in her health so no need to worry (in fact she’s growing stronger and stronger), just a prize cock up in communication between the two hospitals!!!!

So prayers for my release tomorrow. I’m doing really well, feel fine and BP’s slowly coming down. Dr will review me tomorrow… watch this space!

I NEED to be with my baby now!

I’m feeling fine thanks, but then I’ve been feeling fine throughout. My BP’s still up and they now have me on a combination of 2 different drugs to try and bring it down. Dunno what the next step is if this doesn’t work.

Lexie’s doing brilliantly. They’re rapidly increasing her feeds. Last night she was on 0.5ml milk every 2 hours, tonight they’re now up to 2ml every hour. She loves it! She takes most of it down her nasogastric tube but the last few drops in her mouth.

She loves her teddy too ) xxx

Katherine Wilson Lexie had 2 hours Kangaroo care with Mummy today and will be having more with Daddy tonight. She loves it, as do we!

I’m still on the ward, BP’s not stabilising but the Drs don’t seem overly worried and like Al says I’m not going to complain as I’m getting free bed and board, all the drugs I can eat, three meals put in front of you every day and free babysitting!!!

Katherine Wilson For those of you who have been asking. I am on Rowan Ward (room 8), Rockingham Building, Kettering General Hospital. Visiting is 3-8pm for me and 2-3pm and 6-7pm for Lexie on SCBU but one of us has to accompany you with her.

Do let me/us know if you’re coming though as we may be in Kangaroo Care with her otherwise which I don’t like to interrupt.

Katherine Wilson Jane, Lexie’s nurse is making the call to GEH for a cot there. Woooooo! Long line out tonight and as long as she stays the same for 48 hours once that’s out they’ll be transferring her back as soon as there’s a cot and the ambulance transfer team can fit her in.

Katherine Wilson right everyone: prayers for me please that my BP readings overnight are OK. Lexie Lollipop is on the transfer list to be moved back to GEH SCBU and as long as there are no emergencies that take either the transfer team or the cot at GEH between now and then she’ll be going tomorrow.

My care plan is release as long as my BP remains the same as they’ve finally cracked the dosages and timings of my meds!

Katherine Wilson Somewhere right now, a Midwife is getting yelled at for late medications, holding their bladder because they don’t have time to pee, starving because they missed lunch, being puked on, pooped on, bled on, yelled at and is missing their family while taking care of yours. In the minute it took you to read this Midwives all over the world are saving lives.

Katherine Wilson Really well thanks hon. She’s gained a little more weight today (10g since Friday) which is a lot less than the last weigh in but they have reduced her feeds. There’s a fine balance and they’re just trying to find it.

She’s ace though, getting bigger and even stronger each day and beginning to take to the breast (if slowly and not much as she gets really tired really quickly, but we’ve made a start).

Katherine Wilson People keep saying that they don’t know how I’m coping so well having my baby in hospital. Well, some days I don’t cope so well. But, most days I’m just grateful for all this extra time I’m getting with my beautiful, clever baby girl. Let’s face it, she’s 6 weeks old already and shouldn’t have been born for another 4 weeks. This is all extra time I get to interact with, cuddle and love her :0)

Katherine Wilson is trying desperately to not get too excited but our gorgeous girl might be home this weekend! It all hinges on her weight gains over the next 3 days.

Really enjoying my days in the Mum & Baby room on the unit. No monitor, no interruptions, just me and her for 10 hours a day :0) Can’t wait for it to be like this 24 hours a day.

Katherine Wilson 60g gain since Sunday so she’s 3lb 13oz now and……. I’m staying in with her for the next 2 nights to feed her exclusively and as long as she’s gained weight on Friday we’re off to that place that we can’t speak the name of (it’s a SCBU rule, the moment you mention the ‘H’ word the babies start misbehaving!)

Katherine Wilson well Lexie did really well with her traumatic day. An eye test, a blood test, a check up at the GP and 2 immunisations. I’m sure it was all the cuddles from her Aunties on SCBU (Davina Bhardwaj) that helped!
